All of the Reds’ usual suspects played a part in their 27-17 win over the Brumbies at their now-conquered fortress in Canberra tonight. Genia, Cooper and Horwill were all relentless workhorses.
But it was the new suspects that really shone, namely Lachie Turner and Aidan “The Kid with Toe” Toua. Turner had an absolutely sterling match, scoring a try and saving a couple more. Toua however had a bit of a mixed bag spilling his skittles underneath a couple of absolute sitters but then putting the pedal to the metal to speed past Jesse Mogg and score.
We were even able to go on to win despite losing the controversial sin-binning of Greg Holmes in the 53rd minute.
What saved us, before and after Holmes’ sin-binning, and left bookies slack-jawed all across this Great Brown Land of ours, was the Reds unassailable defence on their own line. Any lesser team would have drowned in a flurry of opposition point scorers. But not the Reds. No.
They held staunch and in doing so they gave every Reds fan a bit of swagger to their step, because deep down, we know this was more than just a single victory. It was a precursor to an absolute cracker of a season.
